Due to selective abortion practices, China and India are facing a shortage of women. The numbers don't seem as crazy as I expected (among kids under 4 in China, there are 120 males to every 100 females - usually this spread never gets bigger than 5 naturally).

India has actually trying to provide compensation for baby girls to encourage the parents not to abort them.

The authors here try to draw the conclusion that the relative lack of females is going to drive these countries away from Democracy and into a more authoritarian-type government. They apparently didn't stop to realize that China is already an authoritarian Communist government.
